12 points to consider when planning bathroom design

With a little planning, you can get much more than “functional” out of your bathroom. You can integrate it into your home and decoration and enhance the value of your house. These are the 12 fundamental points that you can consider.

  1. Use striking materials and preferably with more vivid colors. Not only will this give a hygienic and clean feel and appearance, but it will also give a feeling of space and welcome.
  2. Look for new and trendy ideas and don’t just replace. New advances in technology have provided the industry with a host of products that were never even imagined a couple of decades ago.
  3. Try to think of new trends in bathroom functionality, like having two sinks or showers so residents can share time in the room.
  4. You can mix and match colors as long as they are suitable and you can match furniture and towels etc. Such a design allows for quick changes to the theme without the need for an overall change.
  5. When it comes to that general feeling in relation to wearers, you can go for a sleek design in neutral colors if you want a masculine feel and try greys, taupes, beiges. For a more common “hers and his” bathroom, add more pops of color to satisfy the feminine aspects.
  6. For a neutral place use whiter bathrooms that never go out of style. Try the new off-white and cream shades for a clean, relaxing environment that goes with everything and is a safe bet if you’re planning to sell.
  7. Making the best use of space and organization gives the room a symmetrical appearance and a feeling of space and lightness. Put in a few cupboards for towels and bedding if space allows, but be careful with colors and patterns.
  8. There is a lot to look for when it comes to lighting, but the main aspect of lighting is that it adds depth and dimension to corners and can make a small bathroom appear much larger. You can play with the lighting to create the kind of ambience and atmosphere you dream of.
  9. Mix lighting with wall-mounted mirrors that can add depth and dimension. However, be aware that the mirrors need a lot of attention in cleaning and defogging. Natural light from windows is just as important as replacing old drafty windows with larger light inviting modern ones that are also energy efficient and allow for that feeling of expanded space. The artificial and candlelight feel and light provide that look you can dream of and only believe exists in the movies.
  10. Not just modern which is cool, you can go for vintage and retro styles if you go with the overall design and feel of the house, but be prepared for adventures and learn about its history.
  11. If your bathroom size allows and you have that budget and desire, you can include many options like a Jacuzzi, spa, soaking tub or shower, dressing/toilet area, or an attached sauna.
  12. There are functional points you need to keep in mind when it comes to designing for people with special needs and different ages that you probably need advice on.

Whatever your priorities, needs, and aspirations, you can never be done when it comes to deciding on the design of the main component of your bathroom, for example, the bathroom, due to the great variety of it. The internet is vast and resourceful and I personally draw most of my aspirations from what is available there.
