And that increased my suspicion of his guilt.” Those were the words of a police officer recounting his thoughts to a supervisor. He had just captured a criminal who had been on the run for decades.

A researcher found that most people lie in everyday conversations.     • Forehead: When someone’s forehead begins to sweat, take note of what preceded that action. Although the person may be sweating due to the heat, note the extent to which he continues to sweat based on the questions raised in the conversation. When combined with other signs, you will have a better perception of the person’s deception or truthfulness.

    • Eyes – In some situations, a binder will avoid eye contact, because they know that a lack of eye contact may indicate someone is lying. And others will maintain eye contact longer than usual. To decide when someone might be lying, look at what that person’s regular eye contact is in different situations. As an example, look at his eye movement when he is calm versus when he feels threatened in an attempt not to reveal the truth. While nerves may play a role in your actions, guilt over lying may be the real source.

    • Ears: Someone rubbing their ears can indicate that they cannot hear what you are saying. But constant petting is usually a sign that they are trying to comfort themselves. While they may be nervous, be aware of some of the other signs to gauge if there is something more to their touch.

    • Hands – Some people cover their mouths with their hands when lying. They are trying to contain their words. If someone makes big hand gestures and then starts making smaller gestures while displaying some of the other signs noted, that could be another clue that they’re trying to hide the lie they want you to believe is the truth.

    • Fists: Hands that become fists indicate possible hostile actions to follow. Such a gesture in a tense situation can mean that the person is tired of your inquisition. He may be experiencing anxiety thinking that you are aware of his misleading statements.

    • Feet: When someone suspects that you are aware of their lie, they can move their body and point their feet to the nearest exit. That gesture indicates that he wants to get out of the current environment because he feels uncomfortable.
