Important Cat Safety Tips You Can’t Ignore

You may have heard the famous saying: ‘curiosity killed the cat’. Curiosity can come from the cat or from a human; however, curiosity could be a possible reason for your cat’s death. Stray cats face a number of dangers including speeding cars, sunburn, cruel humans, snakes, ticks, dogs and other predators. The safety of the cat, in such cases, becomes a matter of concern for the pet owner.

After purchasing a cat, one option is to provide your kitty with a cat enclosure that allows her to roam without danger of harm. Another solution is to use a harness on the cat. There are many other cat safety tips that should be followed.

To start, familiarize yourself with your pet and feline behavior in general. Any sudden change in behavior requires you to take your pet to the vet. Installing protective screens in your house is also good as it will prevent the cat from getting out or falling.

Keep your house cat away from stray dogs as they are likely to start a fight. It’s best to keep your cat indoors if you have workers inside the house. Keep strings, threads, needles and wool locked up so your kitty can’t get to them.

Contrary to popular belief, milk can actually be harmful to your feline friend, as it can cause gas and diarrhea. Avoid milk and if you have to give him some milk, do it in small doses.

When using rodent baits, keep the traps in a place where your kitty can’t get to them. You should also keep medications out of your pet’s reach. Remember: ingestion of prescription drugs will be lethal to a cat.

Chocolates, spices, and chewy foods can also harm your cat. Therefore, keep them under lock and key as well. Stoves are also a high danger zone for them. Keep your kitchen locked or make sure your kitty never gets close enough to the stove.

Since cat nutrition is different from dog nutrition, do not feed your cat dog food. As there are certain plants that are poisonous to cats, you should check the list of such plants and keep your cat away from them.

Snuggling up in cozy corners is common feline behavior. Places like the washing machine, the dishwasher, and the back of the refrigerator are favorites for cats. Check them to keep the cat out.

Cat safety is a top concern for cat owners and following these simple rules should ensure your kitty doesn’t get into any unwanted trouble.
