Japanese animation: what makes it so unique and popular?

If you are an animation lover, you must not miss the anime series from Japan. These exciting animated movies are well known for their strong plots, complex storylines, and some very famous doe-eyed characters. They are popular among children and adults of both sexes in different countries of the world. The popularity is evident by the large number of visitors who visit ‘Anaheim’s Anime Expo’, the largest annual anime and manga trade show in the US.

What is the reason behind this popularity and mass appeal? What makes Japanese animation so unique? The answer is simple. American animations are generally aimed at young children and are based on one-episode short stories. On the other hand, Japanese anime series are aimed at both children and adults and are usually a complete series with several episodes. Furthermore, the characters of the latter are comparatively more beautiful and attractive, and the plots are based on varied themes, ranging from politics to violent battles to personal relationships. This makes them popular with both men and women.

It goes without saying that anime has become an integral part of American culture. From Hayao Maiyazaki’s Oscar-winning fantasy film ‘Spirited Away’, to the violent series ‘Ghost in the Shell’, the popular children’s ‘Pokeman’, TV shows like Adult Swim, and games like ‘Final Fantasy’, Japanese animation has spread its roots far and wide. In fact, it was the popular Shojo anime that encouraged women to get involved in video games and take an interest in animation, which was otherwise thought to be only for men. Anime and manga are now also known for the big change in their stylistic approach.

In short, unlike other animated series, Japanese animation has crossed its cultural barriers and has found a much larger audience around the world.
