Koro Island
Koro Island is the seventh largest island belonging to the Fiji Islands. It is located in the South Pacific Ocean and is made up of many volcanoes. The area of the island is only 42.5 square miles and there are basaltic cinder cones that extend from the south to the north respectively. The other side of the island of Koror is surrounded by resorts and bays.
Koro Island has an airport that is located on the east coast. The island’s population was 2,500 in the year 1960, but had increased to 4,500 in the year 2007.
How to get to Koro Island:
A person can board a flight to Koro Island from Nadi or Suva respectively. A flight leaves to the island only on Saturday. Then, there are the minibuses that travel from one city to another city. Nadi and Suva are the two main cities. Bus drivers offer different trips in these cities.
A person can move even through a taxi, but it is much more expensive. You can take a taxi from any of the major cities to board a flight to Koro Island.
Finally, there is the option of boarding a ferry if there is a means of transportation. For this, a person needs to board a bus from Suva where the ferry will take him to Koro Island at 5 pm and will reach the island at 4 pm respectively. This can only happen on Wednesday. Then from the island of Koro you can take the ferry at 6 am on Wednesday to return to the city of Suva. You will arrive here at 11 am.
Culture:
Koro Island consists of 14 villages and all of them are occupied by Fijians. In the houses rain or spring water is used and the houses work with solar energy. While the cars run on biofuel respectively.
People treat each other with a lot of respect. Both men and women behave well with each other. On the other hand, the school system is similar to the one present in the USA. There are 3 levels of education which include elementary, middle and high school. Students are educated in such a way that they give something good back to society. Many of the students go to USA for higher education.
The food is mainly from various cultures such as Asian, Filipino, Indonesian and American cuisine. There are different types of restaurants that are well suited to whatever type of food one desires.
English and the Fijian languages are spoken on the island of Koro.
Time:
The climate remains stable between the summer and winter seasons. August is the coldest month while February is the warmest month respectively. The days and nights are neither too cold nor too hot. In fact, there has not been any case of volcanic eruption. But the island remains in imminent danger of being hit by a cyclone.
Nature:
Many rodents and mammals can be found on the island of Koro.
Accommodation:
People or tourists can stay in any of the bay resorts present on the island. A famous tourist center is the Sun, which is located in the northern part of the island of Koro. This resort offers a lagoon, a private rainforest and even a coconut plantation. Due to the friendly atmosphere, many people visit the resort and also feel at home.
El Sol is the ideal vacation spot for a family. It can even be the place to relax or for a romantic getaway. The popular TV show ‘Bachelorette’ has been filmed here. An individual can go snorkeling and explore various types of corals and fish. There is a longer aquatic reef located here which is located on the north side of Koro Island.
The Koro Island staff can also guide people to the caves. The caves are really interesting and really stand out from the rest of the island too. Another notable place to stay is the Dere Bay Resort respectively. One person can stay in three hillside cabanas here or there are three beachfront bures for rent. The rental includes all three meals during the day as well.
From the spa, tourists can go to the seaplanes and sailboat moorings. The Dere Bay Resort has a blue lagoon and a mile long beach that can be enjoyed. The other complex includes Koro Beach Resort, which is another interesting place to visit.

Fifty to over a hundred people can be seen residing in the fourteen villages of Koro Island. A unit is the base of the town. The houses are built with straw or stone. The floor of the houses is made of mats and modern furniture is not appreciated.
Rural livelihood depends on cash crops, fish from the ocean or also from the sale of coconuts.
