learning to knit

For the last 20 years, I have been trying to learn to knit. With the help of a very patient friend, I finally got it right. It looks like I was picking my loops upside down; no one had noticed this before! I started with a simple plain crochet scarf for my daughter, who didn’t like how it looked when I was done. So I made another one for her birthday in her favorite colors, purple and hot pink. She loves it so much that she wears it every day!

When we were decorating for Halloween, my daughter asked me to make a pumpkin costume for one of her stuffed animals, so I made a pumpkin with the lid tied with string so it wouldn’t get lost. I was elated! I have double crocheted her a beanie and tennis sock slippers… she thinks it’s wonderful that she makes hers with wool and my own hands!

For Christmas this year, I’ve been working on gift sets that include a waffle knit dish towel, an oversized pot holder, and a crocheted lace edged towel. I can’t believe how quickly I learned to crochet once we solved the problem I was having! My sister has ordered more lace-edged towels with pot holders for her summer house. The look on my family’s faces when I gave them the games to use for the parties was worth more than what I spent on supplies.

Overall, learning to knit has been a great experience. I keep learning more stitches and ways to make more items. The art of crochet is potentially a dying craft, and if others don’t learn how to do it, it may die altogether. I hope to be able to pass on my knowledge to others so that they can have the same enjoyment that I have had.
