May long weekend

Well, we’re back in lockdown due to the pandemic, but that doesn’t change the calendar dates. Whatever happens, one of the favorite holidays, the May bridge, will soon arrive.

Many people look forward to this date for various reasons. Which would apply to you?

  1. CAMPING: When the weather is nice, it’s fun to go to a vacation spot with the family and team. Perhaps a boat, kayak, or bike will add fun to a few days away from home. And of course, there will be barbecues and marshmallows to roast.
  2. ROYAL FAMILY CELEBRATION – Victoria Day has been celebrated since the death of the British Queen Victoria in 1901. This tradition has continued and usually involves a great deal of ceremony for the country and the community. However, Covid-19 has hampered the usual plans for the last two years and thus this year will probably be low key.
  3. GARDENING – When I grew up in a farming community, everyone said that the seed had to be in the ground no later than the tenth of May. Specialty crops have changed that, but it is still common practice to plant flowers and gardens over the long weekend.
  4. REST – Some people love the idea of having an extra day off from school and work to enjoy hobbies and time away from the usual grind.
  5. WORK/OVERTIME: Because our society offers goods and services seven days a week with extended hours, many appreciate the opportunity to work at an overtime rate or to be able to accumulate hours for future time off. Those who are in essential services like fire, police, and medical personnel may find that the long weekend is just part of the shift schedule for them without much change.
  6. END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR – Students know that this is the last break before final exams and the start of summer. Those in high school often plan and look forward to the party time that will take place over the long weekend.
  7. SPECIAL PROJECTS: Perhaps you have a specific plan that you will undertake during the long weekend. Will you build a fence or sew a suit? Maybe you want to make some meals to fill the freezer or watch a movie you’ve been saving for a time like this. Will you practice that new musical number you want to perfect or will you start writing your memoirs? I wonder if cleaning out the garage or organizing her closet is on the agenda.

Yeah, I’m curious what you’ll be doing on Victory Day. Maybe you are not making plans and just want to have a day to sleep, eat when you are hungry and find satisfaction in not producing or achieving anything!

It does not matter what you do. Enjoy your long weekend!
