Meet Superintendent Nicholas Young from South Hadley, MA

SOUTH HADLEY – Dr. Nicholas Young South of Hadley, former Superintendent of the South Hadley Public School District, worked in various educational roles for more than three decades, serving as a teacher, guidance counselor, principal, director of special education, graduate teacher Longtime Graduate Program Director, Graduate Dean, and Superintendent of Schools. He was named Massachusetts Superintendent of the Year; and completed a distinguished Fulbright program focusing on the Japanese educational system up to the university level. Dr. Young has received many other honors and accolades, including the General Douglas MacArthur Award for Distinguished Civil and Military Leadership and the Vice Admiral John T. Hayward Award for Exemplary Scholarship. He has several graduate degrees, including a doctorate in educational administration and a doctorate in educational psychology.

Dr. Young served in the US Army Reserves and the US Army and graduated with distinction from the United States Air War College, the United States Army War College and the United States Navy War College. After completing a series of senior leadership assignments in the U.S. Army Reserves as Commander-in-Chief of the 287th Medical Company (DS), 405th Area Support Company (DS), 405th Support Hospital of Combat and the 399th Combat Support Hospital, before he transitioned to his last military position as a faculty instructor at the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA. He retired with the rank of colonel. He was awarded three Meritorious Service Medals and the Legion of Merit extremely distinguished for “exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service and achievement.”

Dr. Nicholas Young is perhaps best known as one of the most prodigious educational writers of his generation. He has written many books, book chapters, and / or articles on various topics in education, counseling, and psychology. Some of his most recent books include Maximizing Mental Health (2020) Masculinity in the Making: Managing the Transition to Manhood (2020); Special Education Toolbox: Supporting Exceptional Teachers, Students, and Families (2019); Sounding the Alarm at School: Student Safety, Safety and Well-Being (2019) along with dozens of other books. Nicholas Young is also the co-author of several children’s books including the popular series I am full of possibilities.

South Hadley Superintendent Nicholas Young is pleased to have won the much sought after “Massachusetts Superintendent of the Year Award.”

State association executive director Thomas Scott said Nicholas Young “is an extraordinary educational leader.”

“I am honored to receive this award for my accomplishments and initiatives as superintendent of the Hadley School District,” states Dr. Young.

Nicholas Young also has a long and disguised military career and holds the rank of colonel. He was recently awarded the Legion Medal of Merit.

Dr. Nicholas Young is currently the Superintendent of the South Hadley School District and will be retiring shortly.
