Motorhomes and Recreational Vehicles-Safety

Recreational vehicles can be RVs, trailers, fifth wheels, and pop-ups. They all have doors that must have quality locks installed. With the summer season here, many people load up their RVs and start camping. Most campgrounds are safe – however when you leave your RV be sure to lock the doors and this includes all storage doors.

As you prepare for the camping season, you focus on getting your RV ready, stocking it with supplies, food, and of course your electronic – yes, electronic devices. The larger the RV, the more electronic components, such as flat screen televisions, radios, satellite receivers, and even home theater systems. You could have thousands of dollars in electronics. The last thing we think about is making sure all these “things” are locked up and secured when we’re not there.

Below is a list of attacks and entry points. Even better, think of yourself as a bad boy, how would you go to get into your RV?

  • Front Door – Get a quality lock and use it when you’re not in your RV, use it even if your rig is stored at home.
  • Storage Doors – You might have big bucks in those storage bays, close them when you’re not there. You should also lock them at night, even if you are sleeping in the RV.
  • Fire Windows – Most RVs have fire escape windows that are easy to open from the inside, make sure they are closed.
  • Sky Lights – You’ll find them near the bathroom of many RVs; they are very easy to open with a standard box cutter.

When you are not using your RV, you may need to store it in a storage lot. If this is the case, make sure your storage lot has good lighting, secure fences around the lot that are locked, and some type of video monitoring system. In short, the more security features the storage batch has, the better. You might consider some kind of alarm system that you can monitor over a Wi-Fi connection.

The bad guys know what’s inside many RVs and they’re easy targets if they’re not on a secure lot. Not only will they steal your stuff, but they will do a lot of damage trying to get in and destroy your unit once inside. In most cases, the vandalism that is committed will have a higher dollar value to fix than the things that were taken from you.

Finally, you should have insurance from a reputable company that specializes in RV insurance.
