Potty Training Your Teacup Pup

Now that you’ve brought your Teacup Puppy home, it’s time for potty training. Some thought, the sign to look for when your Teacup Puggle has to go is that he will start sniffing the ground if he has to urinate to go and he will start sniffing and will usually start walking in circles if he has to have a defecation. The more you pay attention to this behavior, the shorter the training process will be. Take your teacup puggle outside immediately or to the newspaper if you are training your pup inside.

Also, if your teacup puggle will be using the outside, it’s a good idea to say the word “Outside” and get them excited. Say it in an excited tone like that’s the best thing in the world. Another tip is to take the puppy to the place where you want him to relieve himself. Before long, your Puggle Puppy will be using this area constantly, thus keeping cleaning area to a minimum. From personal experience, I’ve moved a couple of times and I’ve always moved with my dog. He always used the area that I wanted him to use. So this works with older dogs too. You just have to let them know what you want.

Just a little humor. When I potty trained my last puppy, I used treats to reward him after he did his job. Well he figured out the treat part at only eight weeks old and tried to trick me. He would go to the door to leave and I would let him out. He then he would sit on the porch for a few seconds and then he wanted to come back and was waiting for the gift from him. At that point he had made the connection that going out would pay off. For him to understand what I wanted, he didn’t get a deal if he didn’t do his business. This only took a few days, before he realized what he had to do. So another good rule of thumb is Don’t underestimate your Teacup Puggles intelligence. And remember that you are his master.

It’s also a good idea to decide how and what method you want to use to potty train your Teacup Puggle before you begin. The worst mistake you can make is to change methods. You must be very consistent in your methods. A Teacup Puppy only knows what you teach it and if you teach your Teacup Puppy inconsistency you are guaranteed trouble. So pick a method and stick with it.

Some of the different methods are:

The paper method

First, you need to choose a spot in your house that you want your teacup puggle to use to relieve himself. The kitchen or bathroom works better due to the linoleum floor. I suggest you don’t use a carpeted area if possible.

Now that you have your area, you need to cover the entire area with newspaper. Since your teacup puggle is a baby, he will need to relieve himself more frequently than an adult dog, so you need to be vigilant. It is also very important to immediately clean and replace with new paper for any breed of teacup puggle.

You should watch out for the following signs that your teacup puggle puppy needs to relieve himself. Your teacup puggle puppy will begin to sniff the ground, concentrating on it. In no time you should be able to tell the difference if your “Teacup Puggle” is just sniffing or actually sniffing. Your teacup puggle will also start walking in circles looking for the right spot. This is your cue that your teacup puggle should be placed in the designated area to ensure it does its job on paper.

As your Teacup Puggle Puppy gets used to the idea of using the paper, start removing one sheet at a time until you have a very specific area. If your peacup puggle loses the paper, you may have removed too much paper and got confused. That is why I suggest one piece at a time. Slowly reduce the papered area to one corner to make a more confined area.

If you decide that you eventually want your puggle puppy to relieve himself outside, slowly move the paper toward the door. This might even have to be done inch by inch. Patients, is the key here. Remember, you are working with a baby. If you watch animal documentaries you will have noticed that the mother always teaches the baby to hunt and survive. You have to see yourself as the surrogate mother. You have to teach your new baby.

Once your teacup puggle starts to come out, you will eventually be able to remove the paper entirely.

You should also remember to praise your puggle puppy every time he does what you want. This is a general rule of thumb for all aspects of training. Your teacup puggle wants nothing more than praise and approval from him. To them you are their world and they will do whatever it takes to please you. If your puggle pup makes a mistake, all you have to do is say a stern “No.” In this way they begin to learn that “No” means they did something wrong. For example, with Potty Training, if your puggle puppy won’t read the newspaper, give him a stern “No” and pick him up and place him where you want him to relieve himself. Also, if you keep a watchful eye out and catch them in the act, you can say “No” and this will scare them enough to stop. Then put them in the right area or place and make him feel comfortable there.

If you want to spend the money, you can also use puppy pads that can be purchased at any variety store or pet store.

crate training

This has become the most accepted of all potty training methods today. They will come to understand in a very short time that this is their home or den. Your Teacup Puppy will not do her job in the crate as long as she is not left on for long periods of time. This also gives you better control of the potty training situation.

When you first start, try to take your puggle puppy outside immediately after taking him out of the crate. She also remembers to take him to the place of your choice. If nothing happens in the first five minutes, bring your Puggle Puppy in and give him food and water. Wait about ten minutes after he has finished eating and drinking and take him outside. As a general rule, dogs need to relieve themselves shortly after feeding and waking up. Stay outside with him and see what happens. If nothing has happened yet, watch it very closely for the signs I described above.

Also get your puggle puppy excited about going outside. Over time they will learn to go to the door to let you know they need to get out. With my dog all I have to do is say the word outside and he just freaks out and starts howling. There are times when I even have to spell the word to not turn him on in some cases.

You can reward your puggle puppy with praise or treats. If you’re worried about weight gain or health problems, praise is just as good, if not better, than a reward. All they want to do is make you happy.

Another good tip is that when your Teacup Puggle is out of his cage, keep him in a room with your watchful eye. That way, if there are any crashes, or they start to run, they can be caught and fixed right away. You can gradually give your “Teacup Puggle” more space when it is ready.

So you just have to remember to stick to one method, be consistent, and be patient. The better you are, the faster you will train your Teacup Puggle. Always praise your Teacup Puggle for doing a good job. In no time, you’ll be able to enjoy your new addition to the family without the worries of having to clean up the masses and build a safe, loving relationship between you and your Teacup Puggle.
