Research confirms the safety of hyaluronic acid

A study published in the February 2007 issue of Food and Chemical Toxicology has confirmed the safety of oral hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a dietary supplement that supports joint and skin health. Hyaluronic acid provides the matrix for synovial fluid to retain moisture in the skin and cushioning in the joints.

The investigation consisted of two oral toxicity studies including acute and subchronic tests. Test subjects showed no toxicity, even at 33 times the recommended dose, as noted in a review of a variety of biomarkers and histopathology. The publication, which only publishes high-quality research to aid health and safety decisions, revealed that the wide variety of toxicity studies conducted on the ingredient affirmed that hyaluronic acid is safe for use as a food supplement for oral health. .

The researchers tested the proprietary dietary supplement, BioCell Collagen II, which is made up of a minimum of 60 percent hydrolyzed type II collagen, 20 percent chondroitin sulfate, and 10 percent hyaluronic acid (HA). As a particularly rich source of bioavailable hyaluronic acid, it works to promote joint and skin health.

BioCell Technology Vice President Suhail Ishaq said in a press release: “BioCell Collagen II’s safety statement reflects a significant advancement in today’s health food industry. BioCell Collagen II is the only dietary ingredient of its kind that undergoes the rigors of toxicity testing.Consumers can trust the safety of BioCell Collagen II, and it opens the door for new product development in the functional foods market. With this toxicity study behind us, along with With other studies we have commissioned, our next goal is to achieve the GRAS certificate.”
