Whether you’re shopping for a new Porsche 911 or pre-owned one, choosing the right steering wheel is an important part of the car’s personality. The German automaker is known for its extensive personalization options and there are three different wheels to choose from in the current 911.

A Porsche steering wheels can be a real showstopper, with brushed aluminum and a high-quality smooth leather rim. You can also opt for the a sporty, carbon-look model or even a genuine mahogany version.

The newest Porsche 911 uses the same steering wheel as its predecessors, but it’s now available with several different functions and an array of color and material options. The multifunctional steering wheel can activate up to 30 functions when you’re driving and gives drivers access to many of the car’s functions without ever having to take their hands off the wheel. This kind of technology is also found in the latest Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5 SUVs, among others.

For the first time in a 911, you can now opt for rear axle steering in your car. A system of electromechanical actuators, located at the left and right side of the rear axle, allows the rear wheels to steer up to 1.5 degrees in the opposite direction from the front wheels. This shortens the turning radius and improves stability at higher speeds by allowing the rear axle to build up lateral force much more quickly.

While Nissan’s HICAS system (which hasn’t been used in anything since the R34 GT-R and Infiniti’s G37) and Honda’s Prelude Si 4WS had rear steering before, Porsche is the first to use this type of electromechanical steering at an affordable price. It will not be the only rear-axle steering systems offered in future Porsche models, though.

If you’re looking for the perfect Porsche 911 Turbo S wheel, you’ll want to choose the SportDesign option with unique sport-themed spokes and a special finish. This model also features a small display that illuminates the Sport, Sport Plus and Launch Control modes in the steering wheel when those drive settings are active.

Shoppers can also choose the entry-level Classic steering wheel for a more traditional look or go with a Multifunction wheel that offers a lot more controls, including those for audio and navigation. It’s worth noting, however, that the Classic and Multifunction models lack the horn button on the Classic wheel, which could be an issue for some drivers. If you really want to make a statement with your 911’s steering wheel, you can also opt for a heated option or get the wheel trimmed in Mahogany, carbon fiber or Alcantara. You can also have the steering wheel engraved with your name or initials for an additional cost. This is the perfect way to make your Porsche truly your own.

Beyond aesthetics, an upgraded steering wheel can offer improved grip and control. Many aftermarket options feature ergonomic designs and contoured grips that provide a more natural and secure feel in the hands of the driver. This enhanced grip can be particularly beneficial during spirited driving or when maneuvering through challenging road conditions, allowing for greater precision and confidence.
