Physiotherapy East Sheen Offer Services For Individuals

The condition of scoliosis can range from mild to severe. Mild scoliosis may go unnoticed during childhood and early adulthood, but as the curves increase in severity, pain can begin to present itself. During your initial appointment, your physiotherapist will assess the severity of your scoliosis by asking you to move your body into different positions. They may also use X-rays, MRI scans and CT scans to obtain an in-depth analysis of the curve pattern and the surrounding soft tissue. This is to determine the extent of your spinal curvature and to help you understand the cause of your pain.

Our Physiotherapy East Sheen are highly trained in the physical assessment and management of the spine. They will perform manual therapy to balance and re-balance the muscles and joints to promote optimal function. This can lead to better health, improved sports performance and in some cases can reduce pain. We are committed to providing you with a comprehensive and individualised treatment plan.

There are many scoliosis treatment methods but the goal is always to prevent further progression of the curve patterns and improve the quality of life for those affected by scoliosis. We adhere to the guidelines and best practices of the Society of Scoliosis Orthopedic Rehabilitation and Treatment (SOSORT).

SOSORT aims to provide education, research and guidance on conservative treatments to those who are affected by scoliosis. SOSORT is an international, interdisciplinary organization that brings together physical therapists from around the world to share knowledge and resources. The SOSORT guidelines rely on a biomechanical framework and include consideration of the spine, curve pattern, asymmetry, trunk rotation, rib cage symmetry, pelvic and scapulae posture, breathing patterns, psychological state and other factors that influence scoliosis management.

The BSPTS method [2] is a specialised treatment approach for individuals with scoliosis. It follows the principles of Katharina Schroth and includes a therapy program that is cognitive, sensory-motor and kinesthetic in nature. The goal is to encourage the neuromotor systems to activate a self-correction reflex, improving 3D spinal deformity correction and posture. The approach is intended for patients with idiopathic scoliosis but can be used to treat other spinal deformities including hyper-kyphosis and lordosis.

The FITS method [3] has a unique approach to treating scoliosis by focusing on the use of muscular forces to correct curve position and to re-align the scapular and pelvic orientations. It uses a combination of “side shift” movements to correct the curve shape and connective tissue stretches to increase flexibility and mobilize the ribcage and shoulder blades. The therapists incorporate these exercises with a series of low bending movements to relieve the back muscles from the mechanical stress caused by gravity.

This allows the muscles to perform their most effective role in improving scoliosis curve pattern correction. The therapists also focus on breathing and muscle activation to encourage good postural control. Lastly, the therapists address the psychosocial aspects of scoliosis and the impact on quality of life. The therapists will develop and implement a personalised exercise program for each patient that takes into account their specific deformity and their individualized goals.
