Ways to Get Service for a Generator

A generator needs regular testing and maintenance to maintain its performance. In some cases, internal technicians perform these services; while in others they are carried out by a specialized service in Emergency Power Supply Systems (EPSS). If your generator has been receiving infrequent maintenance, now is the time to contact an EPSS service provider. In addition to leaving your facility in the dark, a generator failure could also make the heat unbearable if it happened in the summer. If your facility’s generator needs to be upgraded for testing and maintenance, here are four EPSS services you should schedule as soon as possible:

GeneratorTests

Tier 1 and Tier 2 generators must be tested in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code 110, which requires that a generator undergo a monthly 30-minute test in which it (a) operates at a minimum of 30% of its nameplate kilowatt rating, or (b) meets the minimum exhaust gas temperature for the test. Most generators pass the test. Those that don’t should exercise once a year for two continuous hours using a load bank, a process that improves generator efficiency and solves wet stacking.

Generator testing is an easy process. An EPSS service provider arrives at your facility (bringing a load bank, if necessary), performs the test, and leaves the facility in a short period of time.

Scheduled maintenance

Even though they are used infrequently, backup generators require regular maintenance. To remain in top operating condition, generators must receive the following services at the following times:

  • Newspaper:check coolant heater, check coolant level, check oil level, check fuel level, check charge air lines
  • Weekly:clean air filter, check battery charger, drain fuel filter, check fuel tank
  • Monthly:coolant concentration check, drive belt check, exhaust condensate drain, starter battery check
  • Semiannually: oil change, coolant filter change, crankcase breather cleaning, air filter change, radiator hose check, fuel filter change
  • Annually: cooling system cleaning

Your company’s maintenance workers can perform daily checks. EPSS trained technicians should perform weekly, monthly, semi-annual and annual checks and maintenance.

infrared scanning

Infrared scanning can identify computer problems by recording the abnormal heat patterns (also known as hot spots) that they emit. Some problems, such as loose connections, can be corrected on the spot. Infrared scanning is a quick process that involves minimal work. In many cases, an entire installation can be scanned in one day. Most commercial and industrial users of emergency power have an infrared scan performed annually.

conclusion

When it receives infrequent testing and maintenance, a backup generator is prone to failure when it is needed most, a fact that could prove tragic for a facility containing a Tier 1 generator. If you need generator services, don’t put off until tomorrow what you need. Today you need the EPSS of your installation. And remember: drastic weather spikes mean generator maintenance is more than just keeping the lights on; it is also about protecting the building’s occupants from the heat in the summer months.
